Phoenixpaw's heart was fluttering with fear. She shouldn't have come here without her father, but Windclan needed his help right now. "Mom? Inkpaw?" she whispered so softly that she could scarcely hear herself. She held her breath. What if Lostclan was here? Would they kidnap her again? She pressed herself even flatter against the forest floor, but knew her fiery pelt would betray her to watching eyes very easily.

After having dropped the herbs off at camp, Inkpaw had wandered out again, in spite of his mother's worries about him being off by himself. He needed desperately to think. He was confused... he couldn't get his head around what he had seen in the water. He had no idea who had spoken to him, and again wondered if he had merely imagined it. But still, he had never heard a voice like that, not from any cat. Maybe StarClan was trying to tell him something? He wasn't a medicine cat! Although... he was one of the Eight. He didn't actively think about it, but as he stopped to inspect his marked paw once more, it made a strange sort of sense. Still, what did his destiny have to do with Midnight? His fight would be with the whole of LostClan, and not just with the black warrior who had stolen half his sight. Coming closer to the border, he picked up fresh WindClan scent, and tensed.
"Who's there?" he called softly, drawing the scent closer to him. The good side of her face was turned towards her as he crept along the border, trying to isolate the scent.
"Phoenixpaw?" he breathed. He turned his face to where she was hiding, though the shadows of the trees hid his scars from view.

Phoenixpaw tensed as she heard a cat approaching. The voice that had called out sounded familiar. Could it have been Inkpaw? The voice sounded deeper and older though. Could he have changed so much in such a short period of time? Phoenixpaw? Her heart hammered. It must be him! She slowly raised herself from the ground, looking like a small fire starting in the grass. "Inkpaw?" she called in a hoarse whisper, her golden eyes glowing.

Inkpaw's heart began to thrum in his chest, his golden eye glowing with happiness. "Phoenixpaw!" he cried, racing over to her, scars forgotten. He thrust his muzzle into her ember-esque fur, purring. "I have missed you so, my dear sister," he whispered, his purr catching in his throat at the strength of his emotion.
"I had to stay strong. For you, and for Magicheart. I fought, and grew, so when you saw me next... I-" he cut himself off, suddenly remembering himself. Remembering what he was now. What would she say? How would she react?
"So... that I could be a brother you could be proud of..." he finished quietly, his head hanging. He cursed Midnight with every oath he could think of. That raven-pelted, red-eyed cat had stolen everything from him. Now every cat in ThunderClan looked down at him with pity.

Phoenixpaw embraced her brother as he ran over. He seemed so much bigger....so much stronger. "You're all muscley!" she said in a strained mew as he pressed her tight. "I missed you too." she said softly, sadly. She gazed at him and saw him completely. "My dream!" she exclaimed. "I had a dream where you were trying to speak to me, but I couldn't see your eyes and knew I had to come...." she trailed off, hoping that she hadn't hurt his feelings, but she didn't look away. She looked into his golden eyes, once perfectly symmetrical with pure love. "It doesn't change anything." she said, almost startled at how defensive her own voice sounded, as if someone were criticizing Inkpaw. "We are proud of you! You just bear the scars of warriors now, as we all will...as we all do..." She pressed her forehead against his and tried in vain to hold back the tears. "So many have died" she said in a pained voice. "Sunstorm is going to get her lives now with Pantherfang. Sparrowpaw, Rainfeather, Jaystar....all gone! A lostclanner took all his lives in one cut!" she sobbed, burrying her head into his shoulder. "I had to come and see you, I had to know that you and mom were ok." she cried.

He felt raw with relief, and a little ashamed. How could he have thought that his scars could change their relationship? Had they spent so long apart that he had forgotten his own sister? The one who would never betray those she loved, for better or worse. It was no wonder she was... and then he remembered, and excitement made his one gold eye seem to glow.
"I have something to show you," he meowed, and turned over his paw, revealing the black pad that had once been purple-grey. "Now we can be together again... and I will be able to protect you," he purred, rubbing his cheek along her fur. "You and me and Starpaw. Just like it always was," he added, mostly to himself. If only Magicheart could come with them. But, he wasn't a kit anymore. He couldn't rely on the comfort of his mother any longer; it would only distract him from what had to be done.

Phoenixpaw's eyes widened in surprise as she gazed at her brother's paw. "This is great! But does that mean...." Phoenixpaw sighed. "Has Thunderclan's other marked died? At least if new cats are chosen, we still have a chance!" she meowed, starting to get more and more excited with her realizations. "We should leave." she meowed. "Sooner than later...if the cats here are to have a chance of fighting Lostclan. We need to get help. Even if it isn't all eight of us, I'm sure those of us who go can still accomplish something, right?" she asked her brother with imploring eyes.

Inkpaw nodded gravely. "Yeah, LostClan got Hiddenpaw... so I guess StarClan decided you needed me... or maybe, that we needed each other..." he began to mumble, and felt his ears get hot self-concsiously.
"We should probably see if we can find the rest of the Eight first. But I don't know how we'd investigate the other Clans...." Inkpaw looked at his paws, thinking.
"There has to be some way we can ask around, but I don't think I can wait for the next Gathering..." he looked flustered.

"If only my fur wasn't so bright, it'd be easier to sneak around!" Phoenixpaw growled with a smile. "I met an apprentice from Riverclan...but I don't know if he was one of the Eight....when we got attacked, I went to Riverclan for help..." Phoenixpaw sighed. "There has to be something we can do! Maybe we could go to Riverclan or Shadowclan and see if there are other cats there?" she asked. "Everyone is so concerned with Lostclan, they might not notice or get too upset about us being around." she thought aloud hopefully.

"Then again, he didn't seem mad about me being there. Maybe I could visit the Riverclan apprentice again. He might be able to tell us who Riverclan's chosen cats are." she mused aloud.

Inkpaw nodded. "Yeah, but I don't think you should go alone. Maybe I should come with you," he offered, not realizing that perhaps Phoenixpaw might want to do this on her own.
"Then later we can both visit ShadowClan and see what's going on there," he added.

Phoenixpaw nodded. "Ok." she mewed. "We just have to be extra careful. Magicheart will flay our fur off if anything happens to us." The ember-pelted she-cat flicked her ears. "To Riverclan, then!"

"Don't worry Phoenixpaw. I will protect you, no matter what," he swore, his one golden eye burning with the flames he was known for in his Clan. Sticking close to her, they left the border, heading for RiverClan, to meet Rockfang.
