Phoenixpaw crept along the reedy shores with her mouth open to taste the air. Each paw step made her more and more uncertain as to what her and her brother were doing on another clan's land. They could be turned into crowfood if a Riverclan patrol found them, and even worse when Magicheart and Russettail would be told about it later. She pressed against the side of Inkpaw to feel more secure. "Rockpaw...come on..." she thought to herself, unaware that the apprentice had been made into a warrior.

Inkpaw kept his senses wary for a RiverClan patrol, although he had to divert some of that attention to what lay in front of him. He still wasn't quite used to dealing with his half-sight, and it made him sigh inwardly that is he wasn't careful he could bump into something, looking like a clumsy kit. Suddenly the pungeant odor of RiverClan invaded his senses.
"Duck!" he hissed to Phonixpaw, using his paws to push her down with him into a bed of reeds.
Rockfang crept forth cautiosly, knowing that the two were here.
"Did StarClan send you?" he called out quietly.
"No. We sent us," Inkpaw answered, after deciding that Rockfang was, indeed, alone. Rockfang looked startled at Inkpaw's distinct appearance, especially his scarred over eye that would never see again.
"For what purpose?" Rockfang asked, looking all the more irritated that cats of two Clans were on his territory, the territory that he should be protecting from outsiders. But still, StarClan had made it clear that this meeting was beyond Clan rivalry and tradition. But further still, Rockfang would not let himself look tolerant of intruders on his territory, important as this meeting might be.
"The Eight have sat idle too long," Inkpaw answered, an intense gleam in his single gold eye.
"What 'Eight'?" Rockfang cried, his green eyes darkening with grief. "Otterpaw is dead! RiverClan only has me now!" he had to stop himself from wailing.
"Hiddenpaw died too. And yet, StarClan chose me in her place. Rockpaw, the Eight are coming together again, and we need to start working together, even if it's apart from our Clans," he stepped closer to Rockfang.
"It's Rockfang," he corrected. "I was made a warrior today," he added, with the flick of his tail, reminding himself that this meeting had interrupted his warrior's vigil.

Phoenixpaw rose up beside her brother, their firey spirits and golden eyes revealing them as siblings, though their pelts were much different. "Windclan has lost Sparrowpaw too." she mewed quietly as she flattened her ears in sadness. "We fear that if the Eight don't start doing something soon, Starclan is going to run out of replacements for us." she sighed. Her eyes widened as Rockpaw mentioned that he was now Rockfang, a warrior. "Wow, a warrior!" she meowed. Her gaze went from the tip of his tail as he flicked it in irritation, and down to his broader shoulders and strong chest. Yes, he looks like a warrior she thought. His name is fitting. With his sleek and shiny Riverclan pelt and his strong build and coloring, he looks like he is made out of rock... Phoenixpaw's ears burned with embarassment as she realized that she was daydreaming and had missed something that her brother and Rockfang were discussing.

"Indeed. We need to band together, because it seems our leaders are too busy dealing with the immediate threat of LostClan... they don't have the time or the resources to properly prepare us for the journey..." Rockfang thought of his own Clan, who was still grieving Otterpaw and too busy thinking he was still unfit for warrior duty...
As Inkpaw gazed at him, Rockfang couldn't help but be unnerved by the scars over the young tom's face, and glanced over at Phoenixpaw instead.
"I remember you. You came to RiverClan for help," he said, and couldn't help but admire how her pelt flowed together like smoldering embers. Realizing he was distracting himself, he gave his shoulder a few quick licks.
"Anyhow, have either of you contacted ShadowClan at all? We need them too," he added hastily, and ignored Inkpaw's curious stare.
"Agreed. We should meet at the Island in a few day's time, hopefully with the chosen ShadowClan cats," the young speckled tom meowed, nodding, and then glancing back at Phoenixpaw, waiting for her response.

Phoenixpaw nodded. "Thunderclan warriors are being stretched thin. Especially with the loss of Honeysquirrel's kits." she thought sadly. "All of our clans are suffering. We need to do something."
Phoenixpaw bristled slightly with indignation at Rockfang's remark about help. She opened her mouth to protest, but realized that he was right. "We lost Jaystar. Sunstorm will probably be going to get her nine lives." she realized, almost losing herself in thought. When she came to, she glanced at Rockfang and noticed that he was staring at pelt in an odd way.
"We came to Riverclan first. We didn't have time to go to Shadowclan yet." She meowed. "My pelt doesn't exactly blend in too well, you know. Everyone knows how edgy Shadowclanners are, even with a half-clanner as their leader." Phoenixpaw bit her tongue. Stupid! Riverclan doesn't know that Eclipsedstar is Pantherfang's son!. She thought of the enormous tabby sitting vigil in her camp beside his father for his mother and sister. Phoenixpaw sighed with sadness at the loss of Sparrowpaw.
"They killed Sparrowpaw. She was my best friend." Phoenixpaw suddenly whimpered. "They held us both prisoner in their camp. It was so dark and all the cats with black with such cold eyes!" she began to tremble, realizing that even though she was embarassed, it wasn't enough to stop her from feeling how upset she was.

Inkpaw's intense gaze softened at his sister's distress, and he pressed himself close to her, wrapping his tail about her, knowing that, though he believed in himself far less than she did, that his presence gave her comfort. Rockfang felt slightly envious of this, for he didn't have any siblings to share such a bond with. Not even with Creamcloud, for she had always been somewhat removed from her denmates, almost immediately being singled out as a medicine cat by Emeraldeye.
His ears perked at the mention of Eclipsedstar being half-Clan. Was this true? But... what did it matter to him, Rockfang? He, who was not only half-Clan, but half Tribe as well. He decided not to pursue Phoenixpaw for details. It didn't matter that Eclipsedstar was half-Clan. Things like blood hardly seemed to matter to the Clans anymore, at any rate.
"I will try to contact ShadowClan, seeing as I share a border with them," he decided, and Inkpaw nodded in agreement.

Phoenixpaw raised her wet eyes and met Rockfang's, an intense look in her gaze. Thank you for coming to help us the other day. She thought, willing him to hear the words inside of her head. She felt calm with her brother beside her. It felt so natural for the two of them to be side by side again. She wondered whether it was right of her to go to Windclan, and how difficult it had been for her mother to let her leave. She then thought about how much happier she was in Windclan, and the look of immense happiness on her father's face when her mother brought her to the border. The young she-cat stood up. "Alone?" she asked.

Rockfang was slightly unnerved by the strength of the gaze in her eyes, but showed no outward signs of it. His gaze flicked over to Inkpaw, who was inwardly curious of his sister's interest in the RiverClan tom.
"Inkpaw. You too, share borders with ShadowClan. Would you like to come as well?" he asked the speckled apprentice.
"It would be easier for Phoenixpaw to cross through your territory and meet you on the same side of ShadowClan's border," Inkpaw shook his head and gestured with a paw at his sister. Rockpaw was surprised that Inkpaw was letting her do this. He seemed like a rather protective brother.
"I'm counting on you to protect her, RiverClanner," he stared into Rockfang's green eyes until the grey tom felt his ears begin to burn.

Phoenixpaw twitched her ears, and her eyes widened. "But you're not coming? Where are you going?" she asked, trying to fight the desperate sound in her voice. Was he going to try and do something else alone? Was he worried about mom? "Inkpaw?" she asked, watching her brother's golden eye blaze into Rockfang, as if he were having a private, mental conversation with the Riverclan warrior.

Inkpaw broke his gaze from Rockfang, which softened at his sister.
"I think ThunderClan needs me more right now," he admitted, thinking of his mother. He wanted to be strong. Strong enough to protect his family. Strong enough to protect his Clan. Maybe even the whole forest.
Rockfang nodded in understanding. He and Inkpaw had a lot in common- that much was becoming apparent. "Go to your Clan, Inkpaw. Phoenixpaw and I will go to ShadowClan and find their members of the Eight," he said.

Phoenixpaw suddenly felt clumsy as her brother walked off. There weren't any young toms in Windclan. She was unsure of how to act around Rockfang. She felt small in the presence of the Riverclan warrior, whom she already owed for helping her clan during the battle with Lostclan. She closed her eyes a moment and thought of Windclan and how she was representing it. She took a deep breath and stood up tall, looking like a fire in the grass. "Ok, let's go." she mewed, her heart fluttering in her chest like the wings of a hummingbird.
