Rockpaw took in the natural, serene beauty of the area. No matter how many times he came here to hunt, it never failed to move him. At any time of day, it was always a breath-taking sight. He drank up the scents of the area, picking up some prey-scents almost immediately. Greenleaf was the best time for hunting, and so far his favorite time of year for the nine moons he had lived.
He quickly dropped into a hunting crouch, smoothly shifting his weight from leg to leg. He could sense a fat mouse nearby. It felt wonderful to hunt again. It felt like ages ago that he had brought back fresh-kill for the clan. It gave him a thrill as he stalked the mouse, creeping up slowly and softly. His tail twitched when he saw it, carelessly nibbling at a seed, its whiskers quivering.
Rockpaw's tail twitched in anticipation, as though his whole body longed for the moment he would spring. The plump rodent looked up, a second too late, for Rockpaw launched himself at it, making a quick end of it. He then swept dirt over it, intending to return for it later. He turned to Silvervolt.
"So, how about those fish? Let's hope I don't fall in the river," he purred in amusement. Of course, there had been a time when he had fallen in.

Silvervolt smiled. "Nice catch. You've healed nicely under Creamcloud's scrutiny." he said teasingly. "To the river then." he meowed, padding over to the riverbank. His fierce eyes skimmed the water's surface, and suddenly, one of his white paws darted out, swiping a fish out of the water and onto the grass.

He nodded, smiling at Silvervolt's praise. It had been a long time since he had been nice to anyone, let alone compliment them. Heartbreaker must have been working wonders on this tom. He followed Silvervolt down to the river, choosing a spot slightly father down. He exhaled, calming himself, allowing his tensed muscles to relax, rippling down his shoulders, showing the scars of the healed wounds. The skin on his shoulders and the back of his neck were almost bare from his fight with Jag. Rockpaw swallowed, scanning the surface of the water with his deep green eyes.
There was a sudden splash, and a fish, slightly smaller than Silvervolt's, was fired into the air, the water sparkling in the sunhigh light. It landed with a soft thud on the ground, wriggling vigourously. Rockpaw's solid grey tail swished with satisfaction.

Silvervolt couldn't help but stare at Rockpaw's backside, currently furless and etched with scars. He narrowed his eyes and bristled. Rockpaw was old enough to be a warrior, but still, he seemed much to young to have such serious injuries. It had been a long, long, time since any Riverclanners had been so seriously injured. How had the forest, his familiar home, become so dangerous and so unpredictable in such a short amount of time? Silvervolt got lossed in thought, realizing that in his selfish mourning rage, it was almost as though he was unaware of anything going on around him. It was as though he had woken up from a very, very long sleep. Was it foolish to love Heartbreaker now, when so much was at stake? Or was he right in loving now, while he had the chance? A splash of water shook Silvervolt back to reality, but his gaze still looked distant.

He noticed that Silvervolt held little reaction for Rockpaw's caught fish. He tilted his head to the side in confusion, and then remembering the fish, he pounced and dispatched it before it could flail its way back into the river.
"You okay?" he asked the older tom.

"Jag will be sorry for the wounds he gave you." Silvervolt said in a dark tone, his features more characteristic of his bitter past, his eyes glowing with an electric intensity. As quickly as the darkness descended upon Silvervolt, it lightened. He blinked a couple times, the intensity gone from his ferocity eyes. "Excellent catch." he meowed, just noticing the fish.

Rockpaw shivered at Silvervolt's tone. He had not expected the older tom to feel so strongly about the RiverClan battle that had happened. That was a while ago, and though Rockpaw hadn't let go of his fear of Jag, he hadn't thought much of it.
"I've never thought about getting revenge on Jag..." he said, thinking out loud.
"Maybe it's because I was so wrapped up in saving Creamcloud from him it never crossed my mind..." He was broken from his train of thought when Silvervolt complemented him on the fish he caught. He licked his paw and swiped it over his ear self-consciously.
"Mine's no where near as big as yours," he said modestly. He watched the river again, carefully placing his paw over the water as he spotted another fish. There was another loud splash. He pounced, ending it neatly.

Silvervolt's harsh eyes softened. "No...it's best that you haven't...." he said quietly in repsonse to Rockpaw's statement about Jag.
The tom grinned as Rockpaw complemented him. "You're doing your duty to feed your clan. You should be proud of every catch. And you sure haven't lost any of your skills due to injury. You should be proud." he praised.
(hahah I love how he still has a bit of a frightening edge to him. Makes him so much more interesting)

"Rippletail is a good teacher," Rockpaw said, still not willing to credit himself. Even though he would have shown off in front of Otterpaw, he was truthfully very modest about his skill.
"And Creamcloud is a good medicine cat. It's mostly thanks to them," he added, pawing sheepishly at his caught fish.

Silvervolt grinned as he bent over the water, his eyes darting back and forth. Soon, another fish was sprawled out on the grass. "Want some? We have enough to bring back to camp to feed a few cats. Might as well have our fill while we're here." he offered

"Sure," Rockpaw meowed agreement. He picked up one of the slippery fish in his jaws, and padded over next to Silvervolt, laying the fish at his solid gray paws, and settling down with it between them.

Silvervolt studied the young tom as he ate his portion of the fish. He would be a great asset to Riverclan as a warrior. He was already a very strong apprentice. In fact, he was probably going to be made a warrior very soon. Silvervolt wondered if this is what Rockpaw wanted. He and his clanmates had been given special instructions to keep Rockpaw and Otterpaw safe, though he didn't completely understand why. He was sure, however, that it had something to do with the dream from Starclan that Wickedstar had recieved. He was more than a bit flustered by being kept in the dark about it. But, obviously the whole of Riverclan had failed in keeping Otterpaw safe. "It's going to be more difficult for you now, isn't it? To do whatever it is that you're meant to do, now that she's gone..." he asked, studying Rockpaw with concern.

His gaze turned to one of sadness, glancing away from Silvervolt before he spoke. Suddenly he felt his appetite vanish like a fleeing mouse. His tail twitched anxiously.
"Yes... it will be a lot harder, with her gone..." Rockpaw mewed solemnly. He wished he could ask Silvervolt for advice, but he knew that only certain cats could know about this.

"I'm so sorry we let you down, Rockpaw. There was so much confusion in the camp...there's no excuse for it...but I'll make sure you're safe. I promise with all the strength that I have. Riverclan will have a strong apprentice for Starclan's will." he said with a nod.

"Look, if anyone's to blame, it's LostClan. If they weren't around, none of this would have happened. They've made this personal for a lot of cats," he felt his fur bristle as he thought of LostClan. And Drowningspirit... he added silently, resisting the urge to spit at the thoguth of RiverClan's traitor. He still felt disgusted that he had ever admired him, and there was a bad taste on his tongue when he thought of that, as though he had swallowed mouse bile. He tried to ligthten the mood when Silvervolt promised to protect him.
"Well, Silvervolt, I don't think you'll have to protect me that closely. After all, I'm one of few cats who have tangle with Jag and lived to tell about it, right?" he smiled, but not arrogantly. He knew he was very lucky to be alive. If Creamcloud hadn't been there, he surely would have died. But, it was for Creamcloud that he had leaped at Jag. He shuddered at the thought, that if he hadn't put himself between them, that his old friend and denmate would be dead right now.
