Why? The past few days were unreal. And after all this time, only one word to show for it. One question. Why? The only question to be asked, the only one unanswered. He found no comfort. Not the healing of his wounds, nor the soft, fluffy fur of Fernkit beside him. Not the soothing words of his medicine cat, or the condolences of his clan. There was only one who's touch he desired, who's words he needed most. And that one, was the only one that he couldn't have. Because she was gone. Forever. To run with Starclan, and he would never see her again. He stared at his reflection in the pool of water at his paws. Paws that had been among the few to tear into the fur of Jag. Paws that belonged to a hero, or perhaps a fool. He studied his face closely, finding nothing in it to comfort him. His deep green eyes, so filled with sadness to the point they looked empty in his grief. His drooping white whiskers. The white scar upon his brow. The solid gray of his fur. In none of these features, did he find anything to be cheerful about. Because none of them were anything like her. Why was her reflection not standing next to his? Why was Fernkit's there instead, looking sad too, and so very lonely? Where was her beautiful ginger fur? Fur that reminded him of flames? Where were her lovely eyes? Eyes, so full of affection, that he stuttered and stumbled upon seeing them? Where was her siren voice? A voice so luscious it caused him pain to hear it? Or perhaps not to hear it? Why?
Why are you gone?
Where did you go?
Why can't I be with you?

Silvervolt padded back into camp, a couple of mice in his jaws. Noticing the young cats by the shallow pool of water, he pads over with his quarry. He sets the mice down beside them and sighs. "These are tough times, and I'm sorry that you have to see them. There was a time like this not too long ago, and we got through it then. We'll get through it this time too." He's not sure of how to comfort younger cats, but he wants to learn. Especially if he and Heartbreaker ever decide to have their own kits.

Rockpaw turned to see Silvervolt pad back into camp, some fresh-kill clamped firmly in his jaws. Rockpaw looked away when Silvervolt tried to comfort him, taking in his words. They rang with a hollow ache in his chest.
"The world has already forgotten her. Moved on without her. So, I guess I'll have to as welll... eventually," he sighed. Silvervolt was right.
"You lost someone before. Did you fell this... empty?" he asked, then wished he hadn't. Silvervolt had never talked about Littlewing before. Why should he now? Fernkit stayed silently beside him.

Silvervolt took a sharp intake of breath. He hadn't anticipated Rockpaw asking about Littlewing. He hadn't realized that Rockpaw had loved so deeply, but then again, wasn't he around the same age when he had fallen in love? No one had dared mention Littlewing to Silvervolt besides Heartbreaker...But sitting here looking at Rockpaw was like looking at a younger version of himself. He wanted to reach out to him and comfort him. "For a long, long time, Rockpaw. When I lost Littlewing, I lost a part of myself with her. I think we spend our entire lives giving pieces of our hearts to others and recieving them in turn. When you give such a large part and lose the person you give it to, it's devastating. But I'm sure Otterpaw gave a large piece of her heart to you too, Rockpaw. And she'll always be remembered and alive in you." Silvervolt placed his tail gently on the young tom in comfort, and stared him directly in the eyes. "It is ok to grieve, Rockpaw. But don't let it consume you like it did me. Don't turn away from others. Don't fill the void with anger and resentment. You are young, Rockpaw. You have so much of your life left to live." He breaks into a slight smile. "Littlewing will watch over her. I'm sure of it."
(I was kind of hoping for a cross-clan romance with the Eight. Maybe him and Phoenixpaw could get together or something?)

((Funny, I was thinking the same thing. xDDDDD))
"I couldn't ever be angry with her. I can't even bring myself to be angry at Starclan. I'm angry at Lostclan. They were the ones who took her from me. So, I'll work even harder now, to stop them. Jag tried to take Creamcloud. He's taken Otterpaw. I won't let him take anyone else, ever again," he said, his dark green eyes smoldering, bright like emerald flame.
"Thank you, Silvervolt. And you too, Fernkit. You haven't once left my side. You're a real friend. You'll make a great warrior someday, I'm sure," Rockpaw smiled for the first time in a week, and flicked Fernkit's nose playfully with his tail.
"I think I'll go hunting. The clan needs me back more than ever, and Creamcloud's not around to nag me right now," he smirked at his joke. Though Creamcloud might've insisted he rest somemore and keep him in camp.
"I remember your first hunt. Rippletail told me you fell in the river," Fernkit giggled.
"I still caught a fish. And it was twice my size. I doubt you could drag something that big back to camp from the river," Rockpaw defended himself, also laughing, and pushed Fernkit playfully with his paw. They were like brother and sister.

"Would you like company, Rockpaw?" Silvervolt asked, standing up.

Rockpaw stopped, not expecting the offer. Although he had originally planned to be alone for a bit, that's pretty much what he'd been doing this whole time. Ignoring everything. Feeling nothing.
"Sure," he decided, and waited for Silvervolt to join him.
"Creamcloud'd personally send me to Starclan if I left camp alone anyways," he laughed, though he was completely serious.

"No doubt about that." Silvervolt added with a smirk. "Lead the way." he said, nodding towards the camp exit. "We'll see how those wounds you recieved have improved your skills."

"If anything, they would reduce my skills. I've barely been allowed out of the medicine den these past few days, let alone the camp. I'm a little rusty," he sighed, feeling out of practice. But he walked out of camp, head held high, just the same. He missed Otterpaw terribly still. The wound in his heart had yet begun to heal, but he could at least make himself useful. The clan needed him. He was of the chosen. And not many cats could fight with Jag and live.

(continued at the Riverbank)
Silvervolt canted his head silently, feeling a bit guilty that his usual sarcasm was too soon and harsh on the young apprentice. "We'll go to the River Bank. It's always a gentle testament to the beauty of Riverclan. It's always been the envy of the other clans, and therefore, one of my favorite parts." he meowed with a wink, picking up his pace to a slow trot.
